An alleged ‘demolition campaign’ against churches in a province in eastern China has ended, a Chinese bishop has claimed.
Bishop Paul Meng Qinglu told UCA News the alleged campaign in Zhejiang province, south of Shanghai, was stopped after complaints from church leaders across China.
More than 400 crosses were removed and 35 churches destroyed in the province since the end of 2013, UCA News reports, making the campaign “among the most destructive against Christians in the region in recent times”.
In February, Christian Solidarity Worldwide published a timeline of the alleged demolitions. UCA News reported that leaked government notices in 2014 suggested the Zhejiang provincial government launched the alleged campaign because churches had violated building codes.
